Monster and Roar motors.
Many people ask me what the difference is between the two.
A Monster has more bottom end torque so has to be geared higher than a Roar can to get the full speed out of it on the straight.
A Roar is a higher revving motor with higher RPM so it needs to be geared lower than a Monster to gain acceleration out of the slow speed corners.

Re: Monster and Roar motors.
The above is correct Mark , I could add the reasons why the above works.
The Monster (green can) has an armature with more laminations which therefore creates a more powerfull magnetic field when power is supplied to each section , this then results into the heigher torque values from a standstill. The roar (pearl can) has less laminations which produces less of a magnetic field from power at a standstill yet with less rotating mass will allow to rev higher.
I have recently found that on most tracks outside then the roar cogs down quicker which allows you to keep power on further into the corners and when you come of the throttle then the motor slows down quicker , I find this easier to drive as I dont use brakes.
When racing indoors I allways use monsters as bottom end is needed most of the time and the carpet slows the car in corners without the need for braking. If possible I would use the CO27 wherever possible as this has more laminations than a monster which equates to even more torque.
Hope this helps anybody who is thinking about buying a new motor.
Sean.

Re: Monster and Roar motors.
Incase he doesn't reply to you in time I would go for a Roar can as the track is as big as many outdoor tracks were Roar's work best that's what they are designed for. Saying that though people do use Cobolt or Monster's as well at CW so with 6+ meetings there you will have pleanty of time to try them all.

Re: Monster and Roar motors.
OK Mark , here goes..
When racing indoors I would normally use a Monster or a CO27 where possible , Jamie will be using a roar. The reasons being that a monster will help me get out of corners better because I tend to go into them slower than Jamie does so I need the grunt to get out of them , If you can carry speed through corners and keep the motor spooled up then the roar would be the answer. I will probably be running around a ratio of 6.5 with a CO27 , 7 with a monster and 7.7 with a roar. Brushes will also be a factor in what ratio I run as XXX dont burn and can be geared a little higher , H1's are the choice for most racers at the moment but 4499's , putnams , F lines , and Z1's will do the job.
Before I get too carried away I can just add that when running indoors I try to run the biggest spur gear I can , I feel this helps with bottom end , others may vary but that works for me.

Re: Monster and Roar motors.
Oh , yeh... Running outdoors I would start with a ratio of 5.9 at any average size track , I set the 5th fastest time ever at Cotswolds at Torq using a roar geared at 5.7.

As I have always said "it's not what you know it's who you know" thanks Sean.
